DanD photography+ Video: motion logo
As part of my push into video (and offering web video production services to my commercial photography clients), I’m working on a few things at the moment. Just thought I’d share a quick work in progress animation of my DanD logo I developed today. I love working with motion graphics and I really wish After Effects had been around when I was a kid; I would have had a ball. I’m trying to keep in with my current ‘brand’ but emphasising the video side. Much still to do…
The video above really needs to be watched with sound on by the way. The animations, sounds and key frames are all linked. Watch out Pixar! (yeah right).

New Video Section
DanD photography+ Video: The clue is in the title. In addition to my commercial photography (stills), I now shoot and edit video for clients.
Embracing the moving image as part of your business is a natural progression these days for many photographers. For the last couple of years this transition has been a big part of my time. The principles of the moving image are very similar to the rules of still photography, but there are many many subtle differences. The learning curve, particularly on sound and the editing side of things is a steep one.
So far I’ve built up a small portfolio of video work, and I’m about to go full assault offering clients corporate and commercial web-focused video packages, with creative editing and motion graphics.
The first small step was to get a half decent section of my current website together specifically dedicated to video, and then start telling people about it. I believe this is called marketing, or something…
Anyway, here’s my new video portfolio page for now, enjoy:

Timelapse: a personal video project
I live in a beautiful part of the UK, and like many things in life I often take it for granted, which is a bit rubbish really. So, I’ve decided to make a time lapse video feature about West Yorkshire’s Calder Valley, with its rugged countryside and character towns as a personal video project/ homage to where I live.
This clip is just a brief taster from some footage I’ve captured so far. It’s only short, but is currently a mixture of ‘stills based’ time lapse footage and actual HD video in it’s current form, and was made using a combination of Lightroom, Premiere Pro and After Effects.
Just to give a rough idea of the complexities involved in this type of video production, the first part of the clip alone is made up of 500 still images – It’s an involved and lengthy process!
Anyway, lots more to come on this, and for anyone that’s interested I’ll be blogging more about the technical aspects involved in making time lapse videos, so watch this space.

Project London (part 2)
Here’s another quick update from ‘project London’ (a week long assignment to capture the iconic sites of central London for large format wall art prints in the newly built and soon to open UCH Macmillan Cancer Centre.)
Day 2 now, and my first full day in the city. The weather is freakishly good for April so it’s time to don the comfy boots and get out there snapping.
Location(s): South Bank along the Thames
Targets for the day: Houses of Parliament (daytime), St Paul’s and Millenium bridge, Oxo Tower, Tower Bridge, anything else that catches my eye along the South Bank. More after the leap…
Project London (part 1)
Here’s the first proper update from my ‘Project London’ assignment. As mentioned in my previous blog, the brief for this week long project was to capture the iconic London sites for large format wall art prints in the newly built and soon to open UCH Macmillan Cancer Centre. For my first evening of arrival I had planned to get some decent low light shots. Staying in a hotel on the south bank, just a (long) stones throw from the Thames, the Eye and HP I thought I wouldn’t venture too far from home to begin with, so here are a few picks from day 1…
Project London (intro)
Not done a blog update for while, so here is a very brief taster of a recent project I’ve been working on for a client. “Project London” I’m imaginatively titling it, and the shot above is one from a set I took on my first evening of arrival to our fair capital city.
I spent 6 days covering most of the major ‘iconic’ London sites as per the brief, so it was quite a challenge on brain, body and shoes. The final images will end up as large format acrylic panel prints on the walls of the new London UCH Macmillan Cancer Centre – the UK’s new and most advanced cancer facility, opening at the end of April.
I’ll try to do some proper blog posts of the trip with lots more images and details over the next few weeks for anyone that’s interested, but for now I’d better get back to work and edit some photos…
Ta for now.

Architectural Photography Manchester: Spinningfields
I recently completed an architectural assignment for Sheppard Robson Architects in Manchester. The Spinningfields site off Deansgate is home to several of their projects, and I was commissioned to capture aspects around the Avenues and other prime buildings/ retail spots and features….
Gear review: Capdase mKeeper for the Sony NEX-5/ NEX-5N
Time for a quick new gear review. This is the first of a few I’ll be doing so let’s start small. Cases for your cameras – a tad boring some might say, but often necessary when you care about looking after your shiny new stuff…
Latest interior shoot: Barton Park
Is there a minimum age you have to be to move into a nursing home? Is your mid-30’s too young? Shame really, as my latest interior assignment was for luxury nursing home Barton Park in Southport, and a very nice place it is too…
Speech and Language Therapists
A quick intro from another web video production I’ve recently filmed and edited. More students from Manchester University, this time undergraduate speech and language therapists talking about all aspects of the course and their training. This is just a small section of a larger more in-depth feature, but there were a few interesting things from a technical point of view in making this short film…
