BUILD #3

Latest video feature from my ‘BUILD’ series, documenting the entire process of constructing a new housing development from start to finish over 18 months, in South Manchester.  We are roughly 3/4 of the way there now with parts of the site ready, so this is probably the last ‘teaser’ short, before the final film. It features moving in day for some of the new residents and contains a healthy mix of short-term timelapse photography and traditional filming as per the previous BUILD videos…

6 months in 60 seconds (from series BUILD)

Sneak preview from my timelapse photography and video project for my housing client in South Manchester. I’ve been producing a mixture of short-term timelapse photography and general filming up until now, capturing the whole site build and progress using various HDSLR gear, sliders and the like (see my other BUILD posts on the blog here and here for more details on that score).

This is the first footage I’ve cobbled together so far, for part of the long-term timelapse feature. As suggested by the title this is around 6 months worth of stills captured by 2 of the on-site security cameras (one at each end of the build) that are set  to capture approximately 10 images per day. The quality of still images from a building site security camera is, shall we say, lacking to put it mildly. It’s partly for this reason I’ve put the footage from both ends in one video above. Running so small it’s much more forgiving on the low res/ low quality of the files I’ve got to work with.

The video was made using Lightroom, After Effects and Premiere Pro, and there’s a shocking amount of work that goes into producing something so ‘short’ and seemingly simple. The plan is to work chunks of these long term videos into a final film, so lots more to come on that front. Stay tuned…

Music credit: ‘Faster than the eye can perceive’ by DJ Rkod.  I kind of like the 80’s Automan vibe, and the tempo fits the footage speed nicely.

Architectural photography: shooting wide

Image from a recent architectural assignment in Manchester, inside the new Co-op headquarters building at One Angel Square. It’s what I technically refer to as a totally ‘batshit’ picture. Let me explain…(more below the scroll doooown)

This picture baffles me a bit, as I love it and hate it at the same time. I normally shy away from shooting less than 24mm on full frame for anything architectural, as it often distorts the image too much and makes aspects and ratios look out of kilter. In other words, it just looks wrong. But this situation was crying out for a super wide shot, in amongst the others for the job, so here it is. This is at 14mm, and is capturing every single one of the 14 floors, which are home to, or rather the workplace of 3,000 Co-op employees. It’s a crazy image, and it really needs to be seen large to appreciate the detail and scale of this impressive structure. Just wanted to share this one for now, I’ll hopefully update with more images from this particular shoot, mostly less batshit, at a later date.

*UPDATE* see this blog post here for more images

Books, old and new: Liverpool Central Library

Liverpool Central Library. Copyright DanD photography

One of the biggest library development projects of recent times, Liverpool Central Library opens its doors again soon after a major re-furb, and I had the pleasure of photographing the interior for a client this week. The building is now a striking combination of 21st century modernity mixed with grade II listed parts, including the famous Picton and Hornby reading rooms, now restored to their former glory.

Easdale Tarn Lake District

It’s not often I pick up a camera for fun these days, which is an unfortunate side effect of being a commercial photographer for a living. However, whenever I go to the Lake District I always take one with me. How could you not?

Editorial photography: on assignment

Editorial photographer yorkshire

One of my recent editorial assignments was for the Guardian, on location in Manchester. It was to photograph a local government network meeting, and took place in the town hall. The screen grab above is how one of my images was used on the Guardian website.

It was my first time actually inside Manchester town hall, and it turns out the guts are equally as impressive as the exterior, if a little on the dark side. Wall to wall wood paneling looks nice, but it’s a real light sucker, and for a strictly no flash allowed job  it really pushed the iso limits of my D800.
